The Ashmont: An Open Dining Space Built for Entertaining

Just off the kitchen, the open dining space in the Ashmont plan trades a walled-in room for something more connected, framed on one side by a two-story window wall that follows the staircase up and floods the whole area with light. Rather than closing the space off, the design lets it breathe into the rest of the main level while still feeling distinctly like its own room.

That sense of definition comes largely from above. A cascading light fixture, its beaded strands dropping at staggered lengths from brass ceiling caps, hangs directly over the space and does the work a wall might otherwise do. It draws the eye down and marks the dining area as its own destination within the open floor plan, proof that a room doesn’t need four walls to feel intentional, just the right anchor overhead.

Along the opposite wall, custom built-ins pair warm white oak cabinetry with a black tile backsplash for a look that feels more like a piece of furniture than a fixed fixture. Open shelving holds everyday glassware and small decor, while the cabinetry below handles the rest, drawers for linens and serving pieces, a dedicated wine storage rack, and enclosed storage for anything that doesn’t need to be on display.

The layout is built around actual use. A bar and drink-prep section sits at the center of the built-in, tucked beneath the open shelving so it’s easy to reach whether you’re setting up for a dinner party or pouring a glass on a Tuesday night. It’s a space designed to work as hard as it looks good, open enough to feel like part of the main living area, but with enough built-in function to handle real entertaining without a single extra piece of furniture in the way.
