The Ashmont: Where Indoor and Outdoor Living Merge

The material story that defines the Ashmont‘s front elevation doesn’t stop at the front door. The same natural cedar siding, finished in its custom stain, and the same Horizon Stone’s 19th Century Hermitage wrap around to the covered back porch, so the house reads as one continuous idea from the street to the backyard rather than two different treatments front and back.

What carries through most clearly is the shape. Out front, the steep gable cutouts frame the entry bay and the garage wings, each doorway reading as its own piece of architecture. On the porch, that same angled gable shape reappears in the screen openings, echoing the front elevation instead of defaulting to a standard rectangular cutout. Each of those openings holds a custom retractable screen that disappears into the frame at the push of a button, so the porch can go from fully open to fully enclosed without changing a thing about how it looks from the yard.

The porch is built to actually be used, not just admired. A stone-clad outdoor kitchen, wrapped in the same Hermitage stone as the fireplace, holds a full grill and a built-in beverage fridge, with enough counter space to serve a crowd. A few steps away, a gas fireplace anchors the seating end of the porch, giving the space a reason to get used through the colder months too. And where the porch meets the house, a wall of accordion glass doors folds completely open, so indoor and outdoor living aren’t separated so much as combined.

That repetition, the same stone, the same cedar, the same gable line, is what gives the Ashmont its sense of restraint. Nothing about the back of the house was left to fend for itself once the front elevation was settled. It’s a quiet kind of elegance: a home that looks considered from every angle because every angle was actually considered.
